Friday morning in St. Petersburg began with traffic jams on icy, unclean roads. According to Yandex services, traffic difficulties, including public transport, are being recorded in different areas of the Northern capital. There were also weather-related traffic accidents, which only aggravated the next transport collapse.

Changing weather conditions against the backdrop of poor snow and ice removal led to serious traffic jams on Sadovaya Street, a section of Nevsky Prospekt, Izmailovsky and Liteiny Prospekts, on Pirogovskaya Embankment, Bolshoi Prospekt of the Petrogradskaya Side, and Engels Avenue. Transport is also available on the Ring Road from the Murmansk Highway to the Bolshoy Obukhovsky Bridge, on Kantemirovskaya Street, Pulkovskoye and Moskovskoye Highways, etc.

Members of the “Road Accidents and Emergency St. Petersburg” community on the VKontakte social network report car accidents on roads that became icy overnight and were not cleared by utility workers. Thus, at the intersection of Prosveshcheniya Avenue and Composer Street, a collision occurred between two cars. In photographs published by eyewitnesses, ice is clearly visible on the road surface.

Also on the morning of February 18, on Svetlanovskaya Square, a bus rammed a tram of route No. 40, which was turning onto 2nd Murinsky Avenue. Due to the collision, tram traffic in this area is paralyzed.

The problem of poor-quality snow and ice removal in St. Petersburg is one of the main reasons for the increase in the number of car accidents over the past few months. Contrary to the assurances of Governor Alexander Beglov, the city was not ready for the winter season. Let us remind you that back in the fall, Smolny promised to put more than 1700 units of special equipment on the streets in case of heavy rainfall and use additional reserves, but after the first snowfalls at the end of November, it became clear that the metropolis did not have enough snow removal machines and wipers.

Restaurateur Matilda Shnurova previously commented in an interview with the media about the problem with street cleaning in St. Petersburg. According to her, “there is no sadder sight” than the city on the Neva this winter.
