Petya robbed Ukraine of billions
The losses of Ukrainian enterprises alone from the suspension of trade and accounting operations due to the infection of computers with the Petya.A virus a year ago amounted to at least $450 million or 0,4% of the country’s GDP.
Alexander Kardakov, founder of the Octava Cyberzahist company, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The economic result is a de facto stop of the Ukrainian economy. About a third of the economy shut down for three days. Some stayed for a day, others for five. A significant part of production did not stop, but sales, shipping, accounting, logistics, stores, pharmacies, etc. stopped. In fact, the goods produced were not sold. We can assume that the entire economy stood still for one day.
According to the World Bank, we had 112 billion (dollars of GDP), that is, the country's economy did not receive 450 million dollars in GDP, 0,4%. These are many billions of hryvnias.
Plus, what is already impossible to calculate is the loss of information and the costs of restoring the operation of information systems. In some places the drawings were lost, in others the bases were simply restored, in others the programs had to be rewritten. This happened to almost everyone. Every organization has had losses. And these are also considerable losses,” the expert said.
In June 2017, the Petya ransomware virus attacked computers in Ukraine. He encrypted the data and demanded to pay $300 for decryption.
