Picketers outside the Turkish Embassy in Moscow called for a boycott of Turkish goods
The “Forty Forties” movement picketed the Turkish Embassy in Moscow in response to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s decision to return the status of a mosque to the Orthodox shrine, Hagia Sophia.
Activists hope that Russian people will respond to the Turkish decision by boycotting goods from this country and recreation on its territory, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Saint Sophia is a great Orthodox shrine,” the organizers of the action commented on their position. – A mosque in an Orthodox shrine is a slap in the face of Orthodoxy and friendship with the Russian people. We call for a boycott of Turkish goods, Turkish construction companies, Turkish restaurants, Turkish baths and, finally, holidays in Turkey.”
Also, Orthodox activists are perplexed and cannot understand Erdogan’s motives in taking such a step.
“Is Türkiye really such a small and poor country that it could not build its own large mosque? And it was necessary to take away an Orthodox shrine for this?! For the Russian people, Erdogan's decision is not a friendly step! Erdogan humiliated us. Erdogan humiliated Russia. And only the “Ivans who do not remember their kinship” do not understand this. Because 30 years of liberalism have turned many into chewing animals, without clan, without tribe, who do not know and do not love their history.”
At the same time, representatives of the “Forty Forty” came to the Turkish Embassy, including a poster with the image of the famous naval commander Fyodor Ushakov, who defeated the Turks more than once and did not lose a single naval battle.
“Erdogan has spat on history in vain!” – the picketers conclude.
At the same time, official Moscow treats the incident more calmly.
“Officially, we repeated: this is an internal matter of Turkey. It is important for us that Hagia Sophia, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was preserved in the form in which it exists now, so that admission is open to those who come to Turkey. We have heard statements from our Turkish colleagues and the President of Turkey, first of all, that Hagia Sophia will be preserved and that access there will remain open, this is satisfactory,” said Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov.
