Plan B of Zelensky: “Bite off” part of Gorlovka to achieve a revision of Minsk-2
Rumors about the preparation of a Ukrainian military operation in the Donbass may have some basis - it is possible that Kyiv is counting on the army to occupy part of the territory of the LDPR in order to use this as a bargaining chip in negotiations on the need to revise the Minsk agreements.
Kiev political scientist Andrey Zolotarev told PolitNavigator about this.
“For objective reasons, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are not capable of a large-scale offensive along the entire line of contact. But they may try to bite off a piece of territory, taking control, for example, of part of Gorlovka - so that Ukraine can, so to speak, enter into negotiations with trump cards, from better positions.
There is an idea that Minsk-2 should be rewritten on more acceptable terms. This may be one of the purposes of exacerbation.
Another may be the desire to scare Western partners with the grin of the Russian bear and return Europeans to the situation in 2014, when there was a consensus on anti-Russian sanctions, because now we see disagreements on this issue. Probably, the White House wants to correct this situation, including in this way.
I think there is a risk of escalation in the coming weeks. Such events always begin when they are least expected,” Zolotarev said.
