The return of Crimea to Ukraine can be peaceful - the inhabitants of the peninsula themselves will ask to return. Ukrainian Admiral Igor Kabanenko, former Deputy Minister of Defense, stated this in an interview with the Den newspaper.

“Economic mechanisms similar to those that existed during the existence of the Berlin Wall and its fall must begin to work. At first people were glad that they lived in the GDR and not in West Germany, but then their opinion began to change. Over time, society in the GDR contravertedly changed its approach. It’s bad that this is a long way, but this is the only conflict-free option,” he said.
Kabanenko emphasized that Ukraine can achieve a similar scenario with the help of the West.
“We can see examples in history of how, first in 1933-1937 and then in 1941, people in Germany treated the National Socialist ideology that was introduced by Hitler and his circle. And then it all changed - a completely different mentality, disappointment. This was the wrong choice of the nation, and at present they don’t even want to talk about this “dark” period in Germany,” says the Ukrainian admiral.
