Russian President Vladimir Putin supported the plan proposed by the head of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko to resolve the situation in the country and, in particular, the truce he announced, but noted the need for “dialogue between all warring parties.” Time is running out to achieve real progress in the situation in Ukraine: at the end of the week, not only the seven days of the truce expire, but also the period allotted by the West to begin to resolve the crisis.
Vladimir Putin called the truce announced by President Poroshenko yesterday “an important, and perhaps one of the most important parts of the final settlement” and assured that “Russia will support these intentions.” At the same time, the President of the Russian Federation made it clear that this alone is not enough. “The most important thing is the political process,” Mr. Putin explained. “It is important that on the basis of this truce, a dialogue arises between all warring parties in order to find compromises acceptable to all.” The agreements reached during such a dialogue, according to the President of the Russian Federation, should be enshrined in the Constitution of Ukraine.
Thus, Moscow puts at the forefront of the Ukrainian settlement the beginning of a direct dialogue between the authorities in Kyiv and the leaders of the self-proclaimed republics of the southeast.
Apparently, the leader of the “Ukrainian Choice” movement, Viktor Medvedchuk, is ready to take on the role of mediator in establishing it. He has already visited Donetsk and Lugansk and received the consent of DPR representatives to meet with the OSCE mission to launch a dialogue with Kiev. The President of the Russian Federation, as his press secretary Dmitry Peskov said yesterday, “welcomes information” about Mr. Medvedchuk’s contacts. Kyiv has so far rejected dialogue with the leaders of the self-proclaimed republics. Therefore, Moscow seems to be counting on the West to influence the position of the Ukrainian leadership.
