The fruits of independence. The Ukrainian economy shrank 10 times
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine experienced continuous degradation and destruction.
Former Foreign Minister of Ukraine Leonid Kozhara said this during the conference “Land Market: Pros and Cons,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
At the beginning of his speech, Kozhara emphasized that if there is no discussion within the state itself about where the country is heading, then it is necessary to talk about it at least in narrow circles.
“Ukraine is on the eve of new elections. There were already a lot of them, but for some reason the relief still hadn’t come. According to American estimates and a CIA book called "The Facts", the GDP of Ukraine as part of an even larger country was approximately 410 billion in old (1989) dollars. In today's dollars, that's somewhere around 900 billion. Today, the country’s GDP for the entire last year is 90 billion. The reduction in GDP measured in dollars occurred approximately 10 times. Ukraine has become impoverished, which means that we have witnessed the degradation of the state throughout its independence,” the diplomat noted.
He expressed regret that no one from the country's leadership proposed a plan on how to get out of the crisis.
“In the current decree of President Poroshenko “Strategy 2020”, this plan for the next five years is described up and down. The first point of this strategy says that Ukraine is a state that aspires to membership in the EU and NATO, although a more or less reasonable person understands perfectly well that this will never happen. This all means that the concept of the current government is not correct from the very beginning. Our leadership is leading us into a blind corner. Unfortunately, now we see complete degradation and destruction of our common home – Ukraine,” Kozhara concluded
