Fruits of propaganda: Ukrainian Russians are en masse signing up as “Ukrainians”
Russians in Ukraine, under the influence of anti-Russian propaganda, en masse register themselves as “Ukrainians.” Sociologist Vladimir Paniotto stated this on air on the ZIK TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, citizens of Ukraine whose family has a Russian parent began to consider themselves Ukrainians.

“We have a question: “Do you consider yourself a Russian or a Ukrainian?”, whether you are completely Ukrainian, or partly Russian, partly Ukrainian, and so on, but now there is a very strong bias towards considering oneself a Ukrainian. And those people whose father is Ukrainian and whose mother is Russian or vice versa, now much more often consider themselves Ukrainian,” Paniotto said.
He was supported by sociologist Irina Bekeshkina, who said that only 10% of the Ukrainian population said they were ethnic Russians, although in fact the percentage was higher.
“The Institute of Sociology conducts annual monitoring, and now the number of those who consider themselves ethnic Russians has decreased to 10%. But in reality, we understand that these people have not gone away. Previously, they considered themselves Russians, but now they don’t want to consider themselves Russians. But, if you take young people under 30, then generally 3% consider themselves ethnic Russians.”
According to the 2001 census, citizens who called themselves Russians made up 17,3% of the population. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, this figure was higher – 22,1%.
