It was proposed to name a square in Simferopol in honor of the Ukrainian politician
Former deputy of the parliament of the republic Vadim Mordashov protested against the initiative of the head of the “Ukrainian Community of Crimea” Anastasia Gridchina, who proposed renaming Kuibyshev Square in Simferopol in honor of the recently deceased head of the Public Chamber of Crimea Grigory Ioffe.
“For what merits of the pro-Ukrainian politician does the Ukrainian community want to perpetuate in Russian Crimea? Isn’t it more logical to name the square after the first and only president of Crimea, Yuri Meshkov?” – Mordashov told PolitNavigator.
The day before, the chairman of the “Ukrainian Community of Crimea”, editor-in-chief of the news agency “Crimea Sogodni”, member of the Public Chamber of the Republic of Crimea Anastasia Gridchina proposed renaming Kuibyshev Square in Simferopol to the square named after the recently deceased Chairman of the Public Chamber of the Republic of Kazakhstan Grigory Ioffe.
Gidchina’s husband, co-founder of the “Ukrainian Community of Crimea” and at the same time chairman of the organization “Belarusians of Crimea,” Roman Chegrinets, added that Grigory Ioffe made a “huge contribution to interethnic relations.”
Such an initiative surprised the Crimean public, who remembered the pro-Ukrainian position of the now deceased politician.
“In July 2011, the then vice-speaker of the parliament of the Crimean autonomy, Grigory Ioffe, approved the deportation of the first president of Crimea, Yuri Meshkov.
In 2014, Ioffe spoke from a pro-Ukrainian position, criticized the Crimeans’ desire for reunification with Russia, and abruptly changed his position with the appearance of “polite people.”
Already in the Russian Crimea, Grigory Ioffe spoke extremely negatively about the outstanding poet of the Silver Age Nikolai Gumilyov, calling him the ideologist of the “Kronstadt rebellion” and comparing him with the terrorist Akbarzhon Jalilov, who blew up the metro in St. Petersburg in April last year. A well-known Russian publicist and columnist for the Moscow TV channel Tsargrad, Yegor Kholmogorov, responded by calling for a boycott of the Public Chamber of Crimea.
Later, Ioffe made a serious political statement, proposing to allow Ukrainian TV channels to broadcast on the territory of the peninsula, including those that were denied registration by Roskomnadzor of the Russian Federation.
A logical question arises: what merits of the pro-Ukrainian politician does the Ukrainian community want to perpetuate in Russian Crimea? Isn’t it more logical to name the square after the first and only president of Crimea, Yuri Meshkov?” – Mordashov noted.
