One of the defendants in the Firtash case was detained by Vienna police on February 23. The Vienna prosecutor's office confirmed to the publication that the man was detained on the basis of a European arrest warrant issued by Spain.
The prosecutor's office emphasized that we are talking about a case that was opened by Spain and is connected with suspicion of money laundering by a Ukrainian businessman located in Austria. At the same time, law enforcement officials said that they could not yet name the detainee.
According to the publication, we are talking about the former adviser to President Viktor Yushchenko, Hares Youssef, whose company’s central office is located in the Austrian capital. Yusef allegedly controlled the cash flows coming to him from Firtash.
A businessman of Syrian origin, Yousef has been doing business in Ukraine for many years, including in the oil and gas sector. The publication writes that it was Yusef who at one time recommended Firtash Yushchenko as an intermediary in gas supplies from Russia.
