This was stated by the leader of the VO “Svoboda” Oleg Tyagnibok during events to honor the anti-communist rebels of Kholodny Yar in Chigirin.
“This is a special day for us - we are consecrating the Legion of Freedom.” We came up with the idea of organizing all the “Svoboda” members who are fighting for Ukraine into a combatant association. So that later, after our victory, Ukraine’s victory over the Moscow enemy, we could rehabilitate our combatants, provide psychological assistance, and find them work. And today – to help them in this war, to help the wounded, the families of the dead,” said the main Svoboda member, speaking at the Chigirin stadium.
According to Tyagnibok, today the Legion includes 1000 Svoboda members, 127 of them are deputies and officials at all levels. “Legionnaires” are front-line soldiers who are part of the Armed Forces, the National Guard of Ukraine, special forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and volunteer formations.
The commander of the “Legion of Freedom” was Oleg Kutsin, the leader of the Donetsk “Freedom”, the commander of the volunteer couple “Carpathian Sich”.
However, the Svoboda formation began to suffer heavy losses from the start. During the war, the Legion has already lost 13 soldiers, 69 soldiers were injured of varying degrees of severity. 15 fighters were awarded state awards, including posthumously.
“Today the eye was pleased when nationalist units marched in Chigirin. They shouted “Glory to Ukraine!”, as they did a year ago on the Maidan. And today this nationalist cry is known throughout the world as a cry of victory,” Oleg Tyagnibok boasted.
