Negotiations with the Americans on three most important topics for Ukraine were unsuccessful
The visit of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to the United States, as expected, did not bring results in a number of areas important for Ukraine.
Vladimir Volya, an international affairs expert at the Ukrainian Institute of Politics, stated this in a commentary to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Back in July it was predicted that in a number of areas there would not be any special results during this visit. It will just be an exchange of opinions. This applies, for example, to the NATO membership action plan. There are no results in this direction. The same applies to the US participation in resolving the conflict in Donbass - no results or progress. The same applies to Nord Stream 2. These are three topics regarding which it was clear in advance that negotiations would be fruitless, and yesterday this was confirmed,” Volya noted.
“From what Ukraine received, the defense agreement should be noted. That's what we got, at least on paper. In addition, the result is also an agreement with Ukroboronprom. In fact, here we are talking about a higher degree of cooperation and collaboration. This includes a higher level of exchange of intelligence information, coordination of actions, carrying out some joint operations, and technology. While Ukraine is not being provided with high-tech weapons, it is clear that there are no such volumes of assistance in financial terms,” says the expert.
“If you look at the final documents of Zelensky’s visit to the United States, the joint statement of the two presidents, the logic of “help, but in exchange for reforms” is clearly stated there. That is, on the one hand, we see an important statement and statements about strengthening the level of partnership between Ukraine and the United States in the defense sector, and also regarding support on a number of issues. On the other hand, problematic issues for the Ukrainian side are listed - reforms, the importance of the head of the SAP, LGBT rights, and the like. Thus, problematic reform issues have been identified. This means that they are the focus of attention of the American administration,” Volya said.
