Kharkov Mayor Gennady Kernes explained why the city authorities had to agree to change the names of streets and squares in accordance with decommunization.

“This is a very difficult question, because there is history and its own traditions. It is very important that after public hearings, local authorities will be able to bring to the attention of citizens about the renamings that were made in accordance with the decommunization law,” Kernes said.

At the same time, he emphasized that Kharkiv residents need to clearly understand that the city government does not violate traditions, but, on the contrary, revives those that existed before.

“We have to make this decision, even though it is very difficult. Accept and correctly explain to people why it was accepted,” Kernes noted.
