Why adequate politicians do not participate in Belarusian elections
The “candidate candidates” for the presidency of Belarus went “all out”, accusing, threatening, humiliating and compromising each other.
For a constructive party opposition, participation in the ongoing chaos would be tantamount to political suicide. That is why not a single adequate force advocating, for example, for integration with Russia, is represented in the current process.
The time has come for populists, hysterics and other mass entertainers. Paradox: “officialdom” and “protest” are mutually beneficial.
Why is this beneficial for the “official”? The authorities can always call mass collections of signatures for candidates illegal actions and accuse, depending on the situation, of being pro-Russian or pro-Western. From the point of view of power, this is equally harmful.
By detaining members of initiative groups, the authorities show citizens: these are bribed lawbreakers, and we are order and stability. And it’s not in vain that the law enforcement agencies eat bread, and the head of state didn’t attack the “Russians” out of nowhere, and for some time there is no need to discuss the country’s economic problems.
Why is this beneficial to the “protest”? As long as Lukashenko is in power, the flow of Western funding for “fighters against the regime” will not dry up. That’s why Statkevich, Sevyarynets and other faded “veterans of protest” are next to blogger Tikhanovsky. Applicants who receive the required number of verified signatures will soon be announced as candidates. Whether ex-banker Viktor Babariko and former IT manager Valery Tsepkalo will be there is a big question.
On the other hand, it is convenient for the authorities to have as many candidates as possible. This will mean that the added comrades, in addition to creating a picture of democracy, will “smear” protest votes.
However, the situation is such that the inevitable election of Lukashenko does not mean his victory. Contradictions and crises will not go away. And the main “tectonic movement” will begin after re-election. That’s when constructive, adequate political forces will be needed, which Belarus undoubtedly has. In the meantime, we need to remain calm and prevent civil confrontation and upheaval.
