The founder of the parliamentary group “Friends of Putin” in the Italian parliament, representative of the Northern League party, Paolo Gimoldi, stated this in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
He explains the resolutions initiated by his party in a number of regional councils of Italy on the need to lift anti-Russian sanctions by the futility and uselessness of the sanctions policy.
“We also believe that the residents of Crimea had every right to decide their own fate, therefore we insist that Crimea be recognized by everyone as an integral part of the Russian Federation,” the Italian deputy emphasized.
In addition, the publication’s interlocutor points out the double standards of Brussels, which does not want to recognize Crimea as part of Russia.
“We believe that you cannot be democrats under some circumstances, but not under other, similar circumstances,” Grimoldi is convinced. – When Kosovo separated from Serbia, this, as some convince us, happened within the framework of “democratic principles.” But when the Crimeans decided, after holding a national referendum, to join Russia, this, they say, is “absolutely undemocratic.” We are against such vicious logic. And what did we hear when, quite recently, the British also spoke in a referendum in favor of leaving the European Union? The so-called “zealots of democracy,” wherever possible, screamed that “old people, retrogrades, poor people, backward peasants” had won in England, that is, those whose opinions, supposedly, should not be taken into account. This is the “democratic” approach: when it is unprofitable, the results of the people’s will are denounced, as in the case of the British, or even called “illegal,” as was the case with Crimea. I consider myself simply a democrat, and therefore I respect the choice of the British, as well as the sovereign decision of the Crimean people.”
