Why Poroshenko began to “leak” the NATO referendum
The increase in the number of supporters of Ukraine's entry into NATO due to total anti-Russian propaganda and military hysteria turned out to be short-lived - now the number of those wishing to join the North Atlantic Alliance, on the contrary, began to decrease.
Political scientist Vladimir Kornilov stated this during the talk show “Right to Voice,” the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I would like to clarify that there have been significant changes in public opinion.
Before Euromaidan, 50+, under 60 or even 70% of the population were in favor of integration into the EU. After Crimea and Donbass separated it was stable at 70%. Now it's 47%.
Significant changes have taken place, especially regarding NATO... A year ago, Poroshenko at a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council said that more than 60% were in favor of joining NATO. And, indeed, when Donbass and Crimea separated, there was a certain surge. It’s clear that the most pro-Russian regions have disappeared. Now, according to the study, only 39% are for NATO, 35% are for non-aligned status and 9% are for joining the CSTO. 44% versus 39% – and this is without Crimea and Donbass!
These anti-NATO sentiments are growing extremely quickly, which is why Poroshenko removed from the agenda the issue that he lobbied for at the beginning of this year, about holding a referendum simultaneously with the elections. He is already sure that he will lose, so he is striving to change the Constitution without any referendums,” Kornilov explained.
