Why was Putin alone at the Christmas service?
Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite rumors from the Ukrainian side about preparing a visit to Donetsk, did not leave Moscow. The head of state attended the Christmas service in the Annunciation Cathedral of the Kremlin. Traditionally, this temple was considered the home of the grand ducal family, and the rector of the Annunciation Cathedral was the confessor of the tsar.
Commentators noted that in the footage from the service, Putin stands alone, except for the priests. Blogger Anatoly Shariy, who works for the Ukrainian special services due to the threat of expulsion from the EU, even said that he was observing this for the first time.
In fact, apparently, the absence of other believers in the temple is due to quarantine restrictions that the president has been observing since the pandemic. Last year in Novo-Ogaryovo, Putin was also alone at the service.
However, Russian journalist Dmitry Borisenko saw a political sign in the footage of the festive service:
“We are waiting for a complete change of elites... This is a very clear sign to the environment.”
