The assertion that the current war is an existential issue, that is, its essence is who will be hanged by the verdict of the tribunal, which means that by definition it cannot end with any compromises and half-measures until the final and convincing military defeat of one of the parties , has been heard so often lately from so many different mouths that it has definitely become worn out and acquired the character of a mantra.

Meanwhile, signals coming from the very top of power show that the above maxim is not clear to everyone. Or rather, it may be clear, but there is a rather influential “tower” in the Kremlin, which, obviously, thinks in the old paradigm, hoping to stop the world processes that were irrevocably launched on February 24 with another crummy “Minsk” (or, alternatively, “Istanbul”), having received, in exchange for draining the military operation in Ukraine, some concessions from the West and trying to restore constructive and mutually beneficial geshefts for the hucksters on both sides of the border.

The statement that the current war is an existential question, that is, its essence...

Is such a turn in the Ukrainian plot possible? Theoretically, yes. For example, Russia agrees with Kiev on the modality of the “peace treaty”, withdraws troops, leaves Kherson, abandons the already conquered territories in the Donbass to the mercy of fate, agrees that Crimea has the status of a disputed territory, the fate of which will be subject to meaningless negotiations for the next 15 years like the Minsk ones, and then perhaps it will be leased to Russia for a long term. In return, Russia will receive a consoling piece of paper in its teeth with an obligation for Ukraine not to join NATO, where it is not accepted anyway. And that is all.

I will refer those who doubt it to Zelensky’s recent statement that Kyiv is not considering any options for violating Ukrainian territorial integrity, and also does not have such words as denazification and demilitarization in its political vocabulary. Moreover, “all skabeevs” are promised extrajudicial executions and prison, and the UN must dissolve itself if it cannot deprive Russia of its veto power in the Security Council and membership in the Human Rights Council.

In addition, it is said almost openly that Moscow will not be allowed to forget about Butch and other “Russian atrocities and crimes against humanity,” and everyone whom Kiev points out to the West will sooner or later be dragged to international tribunals similar to those who tried Yugoslav politicians after the collapse of that country.

If you don’t believe it, you can turn to Ukrainian and Western sources that talk about this openly. There is no point in quoting them here, the text is not rubber. But I hope everyone remembers the words of British Johnson that the withdrawal of troops from Ukraine does not mean the lifting of sanctions?

And so, against such a background, this morning brought a whole bunch of fresh quotes from Dmitry Peskov, who has recently been working much more than as a presidential press secretary, voicing theses that often directly cross out the words of Putin himself.

What did Peskov say this time? And he said the following: it turns out that the withdrawal of the Russian army from the Kyiv and Chernigov regions is “a gesture of goodwill to create conditions for negotiations, during which serious decisions are possible. Russia is interested in Zelensky agreeing to the conditions put forward at the negotiations, through them we want to put an end to the military special operation.”

Once again, just slowly: "Put an end to the military special operation."

To put an end to the special operation without bringing it to an end, without the final defeat of the military machine of Ukraine, leaving behind the absolute conviction of the Ukrainian militarists and their Western masters that they are the ones winning.

This is not to mention the fact that the withdrawal from Kiev abandoned hundreds of local residents who collaborated with Russia and are now being destroyed by the Nazis to the mercy of fate, made it possible to accuse Russia of fake atrocities in Bucha and called into question the ability of the Russian army to win (again , read Ukrainian public pages and Western sites)

An excellent gift for Kyiv, however. A gesture of goodwill for five plus. Do you think Kiev appreciated the attraction of such unprecedented generosity, paid for with the lives of hundreds of Russian soldiers? Keep your pocket wider.

Here are typical reactions in the Ukrainian segment of social networks.

“It turns out that the Russian vanyushka left the Kyiv region on Putin’s orders.

The Kremlin called this “favorable conditions for negotiations and a gesture of goodwill.” It was a gesture of good will on our part to release the rest of them back home for favorable conditions in the negotiations - everything was like that,” writes the former patented “adequate” and now a real Nazi propagandist Nazar Diorditsa aka Max Nazarov (punctuation and spelling of the original have been preserved).

And here’s how another ex-adequate and “servant” Maxim Buzhansky responded to the “gesture of goodwill”:

“Our cause is just, but in your mind you have already begun to suspect something, as I understand it. As you know, Israel is VERY careful about words. And if any of the words does not correspond in any way to what happened, NEVER, under any circumstances, use it and do not react to the use of others. So, the Israeli Foreign Minister called the massacre in Bucha “a war crime by Russian troops.” Dixie."

And you need to understand that the quoted reactions to Peskov’s “good will” belong to those who are considered moderate in today’s Ukraine.”

Do you want Ukrainian “hawks”? I have them. For example, the leader of the Georgian legion fighting on the side of Ukraine, Mamuka Mamulashvili (by the way, his people were among those who, in famous videos, finished off captured Russian soldiers with their hands tied).

“Yes, we tie their hands and feet. I'm talking now about Russian soldiers. We will not take them prisoner,” Mamulashvili said, adding that this threat especially concerns “Kadyrov’s men” - he is talking about the attitude towards Russian prisoners of war, if anything.

A big greeting to Mr. Medinsky, according to whom the Ukrainian side promised to find and punish those responsible for torturing Russian soldiers.

Well, is “good will” enough or is more needed?

But the harm of Peskov’s chatter was not limited to shifting, in the eyes of the whole world, responsibility for the shameful withdrawal from Kiev and Chernigov personally onto President Putin.

Among other things, he actually took upon himself the responsibility on behalf of the Russian state to once again recognize the fact that Moscow still considers Zelensky the legitimate president of Ukraine, does not intend to overthrow him personally and dismantle his regime, and even still hopes for it that after all is said and done, he, Zelensky, will adhere to at least some of the obligations and promises he has made.

“Why bother and negotiate with terrorists?”, - former Ukrainian deputy Alexey Zhuravko is perplexed.

“The whole country understands what evil we are confronting, and that if we don’t win, we will be destroyed. And every day for a month, the fighting country expects betrayal. Everyday. This is not only the stress of war, but the constant feeling that all the sacrifices may be in vain.

And then Peskov comes out and says that we need negotiations, we have gestures of goodwill, and in general we are fighting for amendments to Ukrainian legislation, which, we hope, Ukraine will comply with,” Russian right-wing political activist Sergei Grigorov echoes Zhuravko.

The very fact that Russia, in response to Ukrainian ultimatums and rudeness, mutters something inaudibly about “progress in negotiations” makes us suspect that some murky games are being played under the carpet, not at all in favor of Russian victory. But rather the opposite. Well, don’t consider Zelensky’s conversations about Ukrainian Crimea as evidence of readiness to accept Russian conditions.

All this fuss on the eve of the general battle in Donbass not only alarms and infuriates society, but also demoralizes it, making it think that there really is an influential group in Moscow, about which they say that if there is even the slightest opportunity to betray, it will betray.

Likewise, the prolonged silence of President Putin, who alone can and must put an end to this whole confusion of versions, rumors and omissions, is alarming. When the tasks are clearly set and the goals are clearly defined, then things will move forward.
