Why Serbia should not recognize Kosovo
It is not beneficial for Serbia to recognize the independence of Kosovo, which the United States is pushing it towards. It does not mean Serbia's accession to the EU.
BalkanInsight writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Her potential benefits from a US-led settlement can be summed up briefly: warm words from Europe and hope for an acceleration in EU membership negotiations. But with France opposed to any further EU enlargement, Serbia's chances of joining within the next ten years are still dim, no matter what it does on Kosovo.
The publication also notes that, on the other hand, any concessions on Kosovo will threaten the power of current President Aleksandar Vucic.
“Weakness towards Kosovo will split Vucic’s electorate. The president and his Progressive Party will come under harsh criticism from nationalists and the influential Orthodox Church. In response, Vučić would be thrown back into an alliance with the liberals, whom he does not trust,” the author points out.
In addition, recognition of Kosovo would jeopardize Serbia's alliance with Russia.
“Moscow will not bless any rapprochement with Kosovo, given that it was the Kosovo issue that allowed Russia to once again wedge itself into Balkan affairs - posing as the great diplomatic protector of Serbia. Without Kosovo, Serbia would be much less dependent on the Kremlin than it is now,” the publication summarizes.
As PolitNavigator reported, it is already the fifteenth country preparing to withdraw recognition of Kosovo's "independence".
