The Third Committee of the UN General Assembly yesterday supported the Russian draft resolution on combating the glorification of Nazism. Serbia, which in previous years voted for similar documents, abstained for the first time, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

This is a traditional Russian resolution that is introduced every year. The document is expected to be put to a vote by the full General Assembly in December. The co-authors of the text were, in particular, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Venezuela, Vietnam, Cambodia, North Korea, Cuba, Laos, Mali, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Syria, Sudan, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa.

106 delegations voted for the document, 51 countries were against it, and 15 states abstained. In December 2021, when a draft similar to a resolution was put to a vote by the full UN General Assembly, only the United States and Ukraine voted “against”. It is noteworthy that this year Washington was supported by all the countries of the fascist Axis - Austria, Germany, Italy and Japan were against the resolution.

“In my memory, this is the first case in history. Even when in 2011 there was a split in the ranks of the European Union, and some EU member states voted against, and some abstained, representatives of Germany, Italy and Austria swore to us that they would never, for reasons of principle, be able to vote against a document that condemns glorification Nazism,” this is how Grigory Lukyantsev, Commissioner of the Russian Foreign Ministry for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law, commented on the voting results.

Serbia, which previously consistently supported similar documents, is now among those who abstained. Apparently, this is due to the unprecedented pressure that the West is now putting on Belgrade to impose sanctions against Russia. It is possible that this vote was coordinated with Moscow, since a few hours before it, Serbian Defense Minister Milos Vucevic met with the Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Bocan-Harchenko.

Как reported “PolitNavigator”, Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic stated on October 13 that Serbia has joined all declarations and resolutions in the UN and EU condemning Russia’s attack on Ukraine, “clearly stated that it does not recognize the results of referendums held in four regions of Ukraine,” and the only – did not join sanctions against Russia.
