Why Steinmeier did not support Poroshenko’s aggressive speech
It is no coincidence that German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who visited Kyiv today, did not support the aggressive anti-Russian rhetoric of Petro Poroshenko on the issue of the conflict in Donbass.
Political scientist Oleg Bondarenko told PolitNavigator about this.
“It is absolutely clear to everyone that Kyiv is not implementing the Minsk agreements, which were reached with the participation of Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Therefore, the President of Germany is extremely interested in ensuring that the agreement is implemented. And Poroshenko is already openly declaring that there will be no implementation of the Minsk agreements. It is unlikely that they will find a common language. Their meeting was a formality,” Bondarenko said.
In his opinion, Steinmeier also could not convince Poroshenko.
“He has no leverage over Poroshenko. He can only appeal to some values, but for Poroshenko this is little more than nothing. Only those who have the opportunity to put pressure on him can bring Poroshenko to reason. These are Americans,” Bondarenko said.
