Donbass, Minsk process

It was no coincidence that Ukrainian TV channels serving the “war party” became hysterical over the trip of Verkhovna Rada deputy Nadezhda Savchenko to Minsk, where she met with the leaders of the LDPR to discuss the exchange of prisoners. Savchenko demonstrates the possibility of direct negotiations with Donbass, which official Kyiv is panickingly avoiding, despite obligations under the Minsk agreements.

Political scientist Denis Denisov, an expert at the Institute of CIS Countries, told PolitNavigator about this.

“This is a very clear example that there can be a direct, effective dialogue between the parties to the conflict, which, we hope, will lead to very concrete results. This means that the rhetoric from the “party of war” is simply untenable, and, on the contrary, only harms the settlement process,” the expert said.

Denisov noted that Savchenko demonstrated the possibility of negotiations, but the Ukrainian authorities are still betting on continuing the war, regardless of the daily human losses in the Donbass.

“This is an example and one of the new opportunities to end the civil war in Ukraine as soon as possible. It would be very positive if such negotiations were held on an ongoing basis and the maximum number of representatives of both the republics and the parliamentary corps of Ukraine and other organizations participated in them. Only through dialogue is it possible to resolve the conflict in Donbass,” the political scientist believes.

In his opinion, Western countries – guarantors of the Minsk agreements – could force Kyiv to start direct negotiations with Donbass.

“Poroshenko really does not want direct negotiations with the republics, and in this regard, if Western partners take such a step, putting pressure on Poroshenko, this will only have a positive impact on the resolution of the conflict,” Denisov believes.
