Why the EU doesn’t believe Ukrainian scarecrows about Nord Stream
The transit of Russian gas to Europe via new gas pipelines is, in fact, not the EU’s dependence on its eastern neighbor, but a useful and profitable alternative to the Ukrainian route.
Ukrainian energy expert Valentin Zemlyansky stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“When they say “geostrategically this is dangerous” (construction of new Russian gas pipelines - approx. ed.)… I have never heard a detailed commentary other than these scarecrow slogans: “geostrategically, this is increased dependence on the Russian Federation.”
Excuse me, but the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory does not mean increasing Europe’s dependence on Russian gas? Or, passing through the Ukrainian gas transportation system, it becomes kosher and can be consumed in Europe, but if the gas goes through Nord Stream 2, then not?
It looks this way because, by and large, there is no fundamental difference: Russia will supply exactly as much gas as Europe is ready to take from it, no more and no less,” he noted.
Valentin Zemlyansky also emphasized that the construction of new hydraulic structures is dangerous only for Ukraine, but for Europe it will be a useful alternative.
“Moreover, the construction of Nord Stream 2 for European countries is an alternative route to the Ukrainian one. This is critical for us, a definite threat for us, but for the European Union it is an alternative, because they can use the Ukrainian route, or they can use Nord Stream 2 or Turkish Stream. They have a number of alternatives to the Ukrainian route. That’s it, that’s the whole essence of the problem,” the expert summed up.
