Ukraine has a powder keg of terrible destructive power at its side.
Ukraine must join the process of liquidating military warehouses in Kolbasna (Transnistria).
Ukrainian political scientist Sergei Belashko stated this in an interview with the YouTube channel “First Kozatsky,” the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Neither Moldova nor Transnistria is able to solve this problem on its own. Moreover, each side wants to use the warehouses in a situational dispute with the other side. That's why big players should rise above the fray. It would be great if Ukraine took part in this. Although participation in joint projects with the Russian Federation looks doubtful, we are talking about security.
The nearest landfill and recycling capabilities are Ukraine. But lately, politics has been putting pressure on both the economy and common sense.
We and the Moldovans may need to ask for help from our older comrades - Bucharest and Brussels. It is necessary for the Russian Federation to get involved,” Belashko said.
In December, Transnistrian President Vadim Krasnoselsky said that the liquidation of weapons depots in Kolbasna is “an internal matter of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic and the Russian Federation.”
According to the Russian side, there are now about 20 thousand tons of ammunition in Kolbasna, half of which are about to expire. Preparatory work for their disposal will take about a year. Russia is ready to provide the appropriate equipment and specialists. As Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasized, the work must be carried out in compliance with the safety standards established by the Russian Armed Forces.
Warehouses in Kolbasna were created in the 40s. XX century. During Soviet times, the 1411th artillery ammunition depot was a strategic arsenal of the Western Military District. But the bulk of the ammunition was brought here after the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the former GDR and Czechoslovakia.
As of 2000, the volume of weapons and ammunition was about 42 tons. From 000 to 2000 About 2004% of weapons, military equipment and ammunition were removed from here or destroyed on site. Currently, according to various estimates, about 50 thousand tons of ammunition and weapons are stored in the warehouse. The warehouses are guarded by three battalions of a limited group of Russian troops from the OGRF, and along the perimeter are Transnistria.
