Under pressure from the Nazis and blackmail from Parubiy, the Rada made a “historic decision”
After two months of discussions, the Verkhovna Rada finally adopted the electoral code, which provides for the elimination of the majoritarian system, as well as the introduction of a proportional election system, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Over the course of three parliamentary sessions, out of 4 amendments to the bill, not a single one was adopted due to the fact that the majority of deputies preferred to engage in the election campaign, and during June-July only a few dozen parliamentarians were present in the hall.
However, today, before voting directly on the bill itself, the working group returned for consideration a package of previously rejected “recommended” amendments, which, under pressure from the Speaker of Parliament Andrei Parubiy, were adopted, although this required repeating the vote several dozen times.
“Don’t those who don’t vote understand what responsibility everyone will have? Don’t you understand that this will be a shame for everyone both during these elections and after. When the Voice of Ukraine publishes the names of those who voted, it will be a shame for everyone. Don't you understand that this is a historic decision for which we have been preparing for two years? How is it possible at this moment, when we are completing our cadence, to jeopardize our authority?!
What’s happening to you, there are six voices missing that are in the hall, but just sit quietly and don’t vote. They don’t come out and say that they are against it; at briefings everyone is in favor. The program of all the parties was in favor, but now you sit vilely and don’t vote! I can put it to vote an infinite number of times,” Parubiy burst into threats when once again there were not enough votes.
In the end, after almost an hour of struggle and blackmail, the required number of votes was found, and the previously rejected edits were accepted.
Immediately after this, they voted directly for the adoption of the electoral code itself, which ended positively. However, the law will come into force only on December 1, 2023.
It should be noted that the meeting was held under pressure from nationalists, who gathered a small rally outside the parliament building and demanded the adoption of the bill.
