Just yesterday, many ordinary people themselves entered into the struggle. Today we will talk about a 28-year-old resident of Donetsk, who most recently worked as an ambulance attendant - a calm, smiling, average-height guy. Now this is a militiaman with the call sign “Alex”, he is currently undergoing treatment in one of the hospitals after being wounded.

In the militia "Alex" from the end of May:

“The first “call” was after Odessa. It was unbearable to watch, I understood that something had to be done. And when there was a massacre at the Donetsk airport (I was then transporting the wounded), I realized that it was no longer possible to sit back. He joined the militia and took up arms. My parents were worried and dissuaded me, but I did the right thing, I know that.”

In the last two weeks, “Alex” was at the most difficult part of the front, he took part in the battle for Shakhtersk.

“It is impossible to say that there were battles there. The National Guard simply destroyed the city. They didn't care whether they were civilians or militias. They hit residential buildings directly with howitzers and GRAD guns. You can’t do that at all, well, the army shouldn’t do that, there are people there too, they have mothers and families. And we saw this every day. They were very angry. One day the enemy decided to make a tank attack and launched a breakthrough. And the guys in my unit had just recently become well equipped, collected a lot of trophies, and we were like “cyborgs.” And with grenade launchers, and “unloading”, everyone finally had helmets. In general, we feel invincible. And here is this column.

As usual, by 5 am, there are 6 tanks, 4 armored personnel carriers, quite a lot of soldiers, I didn’t count, but by eye there are 100-120 people. And there are 12 of us. The weapons are in order, but there are few of us and no armor. We already know that they are coming, our reconnaissance is quite good. In short, we couldn’t retreat, we had to hold the position, but there would be no reinforcements, we knew that. They decided to arrange a “horseshoe” for them; there was no other choice. “Horseshoe” is when heavy fire comes from the flanks, and the enemy is also met from the front. It’s a risky thing, you can easily catch your own people, but it wouldn’t work out any other way.

In general, we took up positions, hid in the green area, and we met. They have already arrived, about 30 meters from us, and we need to wait until the entire column has passed and hit the cars. And then one of the attackers fired a signal flare. And the guy who was sitting in ambush opposite us lost his nerve and started shooting. Whether he put someone down or not, they immediately started pouring such fire in that direction, I thought everyone had arrived. They just started spraying fire from the machine guns, from the Bter, and from the grenade launchers, and then they started hitting in all directions. I’ll say right away that we lost four at once, in a few seconds. I see everything, either we are done for, or we need to sell ourselves at a higher price. Well, we started giving them an answer.”

About what happened next, tells the fighter, who was sitting next to our hero in ambush. He describes this moment of the battle as follows:

“Alex” stood up to his full height, I thought he was going crazy. He shouted something and fired an RPG at the tank. I thought it would be blown away by the burst, but the Ukrainians, apparently taken aback, took cover behind the armor. “Alex” continues to yell something, grabbed the grenade launcher from me, and fired a shot. Didn't hit the armor, but killed several on the spot. Here we “came to our senses.” They started throwing grenades at them and shooting from grenade launchers. And on the opposite side, two of us survived. They also fired an RPG, the armored personnel carrier immediately started smoking, and they set it on fire. And everything went quickly, probably 10 seconds, maybe 15. Then we see that the tanks are turning around, and now they will go in our direction - they will put pressure. Then “Alex” jumped up and ran out onto the road, right into the middle. They started throwing grenades through the burning tank. They are torn apart, the Ukrainians are retreating, we are starting to water with Kalash guns. We look - “Alex” is already on the other side, and is already taking aim with a grenade launcher. In short, I see that the guy has become inspired. And for some reason this encouraged us so much, we used grenades and machine guns to give them a good, dense “curtain” of fire.

We look - these three cars have already been lost, and the 200s and 300s are being assembled. We definitely killed about 12 of them, and there were many wounded. Under the cover of cars they began to retreat. And our losses were four dead, and almost all were wounded: some from gunshots, others from shrapnel. But we need to retreat quickly, they will retreat, and the artillery will start working on us. In general, we retreated, and so did these people. The attack was repulsed. After that, they didn’t meddle in this direction for a long time, they worked with art.

I will say this, what “Alex” did is something you can only see in movies. Seriously, we would all just get killed. To stand upright in front of a tank, and then run in front of it and throw grenades - I don’t know what. I haven't seen anything like this."
