Residents of the Novoazovsky district also report another column of tanks moving through the area towards Mariupol.
“About 20 tanks came from that side and began shelling the village of Shirokino. The Azov battalion is holding its positions and fighting,” says a message posted on the Azov battalion’s Facebook page.
According to local residents, a fierce battle is taking place in Shirokino: people are hiding in basements. In Mariupol itself, the authorities are calling not to panic, but children are being evacuated from schools.
In turn, the proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic reported that a group of Ukrainian military personnel is allegedly trying to break out of Mauripol at the moment. “There is currently a battle going on in the area of the village of Bezymennoe. Some Ukrainian security forces are trying to break through the ring around Mariupol. The exact number and composition of the forces storming the militia positions is being clarified,” the DPR headquarters said, Interfax reports.
As PolitNavigator reported, earlier the mayor of Mariupol, Yuriy Hotlubey, said that a second defense ring would be created around the city at a distance of 15-20 km.
