The monument, opened on the “Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” is dedicated to those who died in the so-called I and II winter campaigns of the UPR in 1919-1920. The stele was installed on the territory of the military unit of the 28th separate mechanized brigade named after. Knights of the Winter March”, which is based in Chernomorskoye.

“To the knights of the winter campaign, who defended the independence of Ukraine,” is written on the stele.

Before the opening of the monument, the personnel of the 28th brigade were awarded certificates and, as they wrote in the Public, orders of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Most of those awarded are former and current punishers of the ATO and OOS.

It is noteworthy that in Ukraine so far there is only the order “Knight’s Cross of Ukraine” or “Knight’s Cross of the Volunteer”, and what the Ukrainian media wrote is one of the highest orders of Hitler’s Germany, introduced on the first day of World War II on September 1, 1939.

Commenting on the opening of the monument, the Donetsk historian, an expert of the Izborsk club Alexander Dmitrievsky was very skeptical about the "exploits" of the Ukrainian separatists in the "winter campaigns".

“There is such a good saying: “Much ado about nothing”. This is what characterizes the so-called. “Winter campaigns of the UNR army”: in fact, these were rearguard battles of the troops, which every day more and more acquired the features of a conglomerate of partisan detachments. By the time of the first campaign, the UNR was already on the verge of collapse as a state, and it was incapable of more than organizing raids on the rear of its opponents,” Dmitrievsky told PolitNavigator.

Moreover, the expert noted: by the time of the second campaign, the UNR no longer existed.

“From the point of view of the historiography of the Civil War of 1917-1922 in Russia, these “winter campaigns” did not leave any noticeable mark and were not anything extraordinary: almost all parties participating in the war resorted to actions of this kind.

In the first campaign, the so-called. The "army of the UNR" failed to take control of any large city or transport hub for a long time, and all its successes were of a short-term and tactical nature. The second campaign ended in disaster. However, folk wisdom says that even Thomas is a nobleman in the absence of people ... ”the historian added.
