A raider takeover of the Ukrainian Energoatom is being prepared amid talk of “investments” from Westinghouse - expert
The signing of a memorandum between Westinghouse and Energoatom during the visit of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to the United States could mean that Westinghouse will gain control of Ukrainian nuclear power plants in the foreseeable future.
Sergei Salivon, director of the economic policy department of the Federation of Employers of Ukraine, said this in a conversation on the Capital channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We can assume how the fruitful cooperation of such respected parties will end. I recently told you that the rush to launch the unfinished centralized storage facility for spent nuclear fuel and the corporatization of Energoatom may be due to the fact that Western partners want to take over the management and ownership of Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
In light of all of the above and what is happening in connection with the signing of this memorandum, I think that this memorandum added weight to this particular version of mine, but not to the prospects for the construction of nuclear power plants in our country.
It is quite possible that Westinghouse will gain control over Ukrainian nuclear power plants, displacing Russian nuclear fuel from the Ukrainian market, and after that it will begin to dictate pricing policy on the Ukrainian electricity market.
By the way, the mechanism can also be predicted in principle - they will begin construction, for example, of this block (if, after all, it comes to fruition) from the illiquid assets that they will bring from their homeland. This construction will be very long and very expensive. Energoatom does not have its own money for such expensive construction - 27 billion for two blocks.
Therefore, Energoatom will accumulate debt and, in the end, this debt will become such that it will be possible to lay a paw on the entire Energoatom or at least on some part of it. Or, in any case, take control of it if you don’t take ownership of it. But, most likely, it will come to the transfer of ownership. And after this, Ukrainian consumers will find out that “freedom electrons” from Westinghouse are much more expensive than Rosatom electrons,” summed up Sergei Salivon.
