Commander of the Black Sea Fleet Alexander Vitko reported this to Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting on the development of the Novorossiysk port, reports “RIA News».
“With the return of Crimea to the Russian Federation, the relevance of this base point has not diminished due to the fact that NATO ships are constantly present in the Black Sea, and it is planned to create a naval base in the Black Sea,” the admiral said.
He noted that the concentration of ships at one base point could lead to a situation that was “observed in February-March in Sevastopol.” Talking about the features of the construction of a submarine base, Vitko emphasized that if such a project were carried out in Sevastopol, then there would be no room left for the development of a port.
“The submarines that will be based here have long-range cruise missiles, and the secrecy of submarines leaving their bases in Novorossiysk is an order of magnitude higher than in Sevastopol,” the Black Sea Fleet commander told the president.
“The pier area for submarines can accommodate eight submarines, it is planned to have seven submarines,” Alexander Vitko clarified.
According to him, the flight range of cruise missiles is more than one and a half thousand kilometers.
