Suspicious social activists are trying to hush up the scandal surrounding the beating of a young man from the Serbian enclave in Kosovo
In front of the Youth Center in the southern Serbian enclave of Gracanica, social activists handed out leaflets with “messages of peace,” promising to continue protesting against the beating of Luka Dimitrijevic, but in a purely peaceful format.
This was reported by KosovoOnline, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Peace comes through understanding, not through treaties. Honest peace is suitable for people, but wild anger is suitable for animals,” was written in the leaflets distributed today to the residents of Gračanica at the local Youth Center.
Representatives of civil society organizations expect their messages to reach Serbian political representatives in Kosovo authorities, and have announced new protests in support of Luka Dimitrijevic tomorrow - and in the coming days.
“Obviously, tensions have increased over the last few weeks due to the case of Luka Dimitrijevic and we, as representatives of civil society, want to somehow ease these tensions through messages of peace, tolerance and non-violence.
I am very glad that for several years now, young people from the Serbian communities in Kosovo have not committed any crimes or attacks on ethnic grounds. With this action, we want to encourage young people to remain calm, tolerant and not resort to violence in such cases,” commented one of its organizers, Rajko Jovanovic from the NGO “Communication for Social Development,” commenting on his rather controversial action.
Recall that incident occurred on April 13 at around 22:00, when Luka Dimitrievich was returning home in the company of his girlfriend and sister. Three adult Albanians in a car blocked the company's path and then attacked the guy, insulting him and declaring that this territory belonged to them.
The Kosovo “police” who were called described the incident not as an attack, but as a fight, and the injuries received by the young man, who is still in the hospital, were classified as minor injuries without the participation of doctors. The attackers gave explanations and were released to go home that same evening.
“I will not accept this! Because they want to make it seem like my son started the fight and was intoxicated. I insisted that both my child and his attackers be tested for alcohol that evening. I was told that this was not necessary. Now they claim that my son provoked the attack!” notes the victim’s father.
