As it turned out, before the emergency that occurred in Novofedorivka, the Ukrainian military was drinking alcohol. One of the local residents of the village, military pensioner Valentin Mikhailovich, spoke about this.
According to him, last night servicemen of the Ukrainian army drank alcohol, and after that they decided to get inside the garrison where they had previously served: “The men wanted to say goodbye to their native land, but they were not allowed through the checkpoint gates. I don’t know what the Russians and ours said to each other, but in the end the Ukrainian military began throwing stones at the checkpoint building and broke the windows. And when they tried to catch them, they started running away to the hostel.”
The commander of the Saki Naval Aviation Brigade, previously stationed in Novofedorivka, Colonel Igor Bedzai, said that a Ukrainian serviceman, Major Stanislav Karachevsky, was shot dead in the hostel building, which is located not far from the unit’s checkpoint.
“The second serviceman, Captain Yarmolenko, was detained. According to preliminary data, as the Russian side explained to me, at approximately 23:40 a conflict occurred between servicemen of my brigade and servicemen of the Russian army in the checkpoint area. The Russians called the duty unit. My servicemen tried to take refuge in the dormitory. As a result, Captain Artem Yarmolenko was captured on the third floor of the dormitory, and Major Karachevsky was killed on the fifth floor in the corridor with two shots - in the chest and in the head. The soldier who fired explained that he fired two warning shots into the air. But as a result of the fight with the major, he fired two more shots,” noted Igor Bedzai.
According to his information, after the arrest, Captain Yarmolenko was taken to Sevastopol. At the moment, his whereabouts and further fate are unknown. The investigation of the incident is being carried out by the military prosecutor's office of the Russian Federation.
