Kyiv, February 07 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Ryabov) – Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande actually visited Kiev to discuss with Petro Poroshenko the plan for the federalization of Ukraine proposed by Moscow, which the current Kiev regime has already considered offensive and tantamount to capitulation.

This was reported by the newspaper Zerkalo Nedeli, which is considered influential in Kyiv.

The publication explains: Vladimir Putin first conveyed his version of the peace plan to Merkel and Hollande (excluding the Americans from the process), and the Europeans decided to discuss the Russian initiative with Poroshenko before arriving in Moscow.

Putin’s plan includes recognition of the election results in the LPR and DPR, the creation of autonomies along the borders of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions, the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian security forces from there, maintaining militia control over the border, etc.

Hollande and Merkel did not agree to implement the plan, but the newspaper believes that the successes of the militia at the front forced the Europeans to start urgent meetings to find a compromise.

The newspaper, citing sources in the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, reports that Poroshenko and Yatsenyuk managed to convince Merkel and Hollande not to agree to Putin’s plan, but to insist on the need to comply with the old Minsk agreements, in particular, implying an end to assistance to the militia and the restoration of Kyiv’s control over the border.

The publication reports an interesting detail: US Secretary of State Kerry, who was in Kiev that same day, stayed until the evening in the Ukrainian capital, hoping that he would be invited to negotiations, however, allegedly, on Merkel’s initiative, this did not happen.

“Merkel, unlike Obama, is playing short: she fears that she will not be able to contain the growing dissatisfaction of many EU partners over the need to maintain sanctions against Russia, from which European economies are also suffering, for more than six months. To lift sanctions, progress is needed in resolving the “Ukrainian problem” – albeit at the cost of freezing the conflict in eastern Ukraine,” the newspaper retells the version of Ukrainian diplomats.

However, the publication notes, “even if the Minsk agreements, which by the way do not in any way resolve the issue of Crimea, are respected, the conflict will remain frozen. Putin can unfreeze it at any moment,”

“Putin’s goal is not Donbass, or even all of Ukraine. Moscow's emissaries traveling around world capitals make it clear: Putin's Russia wants to regain the entire sphere of influence of the former USSR. And this is not only the CIS. This is the Baltics, these are the countries of the former CMEA, these are the Balkans. Ukraine is simply the first. Or is someone still hoping that it’s the last one?” – warns “Mirror of the Week”.
