“Think about unfortunate Ukraine”: the State Duma warned MEPs about the consequences
Threats from the European Union to disconnect Russia from international payment systems and to block the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, if implemented, will have a greater impact on the EU itself.
State Duma deputy Oleg Matveychev stated this in a commentary to PolitNavigator.
According to the politician, Russia is not planning any military operations in Ukraine. The only exception can be the aggression of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Donbass, when the Russian Federation will be forced to speak out in defense of its citizens living in the republics.
“These threats have already been made repeatedly, we all know them well, but our position is also known - no one is going to commit any aggression unless there is a threat to our national security. If there is no threat to national security or to almost a million Russians, Russian citizens who now live in the DPR and LPR, then no one is going to carry out any aggression and everything will remain as it is. If they decide to take provocative steps, then they will receive what we promised them – the liquidation of Ukrainian statehood,” Matveychev said.
“They can impose any kind of sanctions - let me remind you that we have an analogue to the SWIFT system. Iran lived under sanctions not only without SWIFT, VISA, MasterCard and others, but also under an oil embargo in general. That is, no one could buy oil from him. And he survived, nothing happened to him. And Russia will also cope with all this. Moreover, it will be difficult for Europe to organize any kind of gas embargo,” the deputy said.
He also emphasized that Russia is not afraid of the threat of stopping the commissioning of the new Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
“How much money was spent on its construction by Russia, we have already repaid it two or three times due to these high prices in recent months. Therefore, they can completely dismantle it if they want - there is no use in threatening us. If they want to cut off gas in Europe altogether, then let them think, firstly, about unfortunate Ukraine, which makes money on transit, and secondly, I’m not sure that Erdogan, who has gigantic problems in the economy, will support oil embargoes. And thirdly, 30-40% of the European economy runs on Russian gas. If they want to ruin their economy, God bless them too,” the politician noted.
We would like to remind you that on the eve of the European Parliament accepted another an anti-Russian resolution in which he threatened to disconnect Russia from SWIFT and block Nord Stream 2 in the event of “Russian aggression in Ukraine.”
