Pogrebinsky: The story with Navalny will turn into trouble for Ukraine
The cooling of relations between Russia and Germany due to the story with liberal Alexei Navalny will have consequences for Ukraine.
Ukrainian political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky said this via video link from Kyiv on the Rossiya 1 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The events of recent days have just shown that even such seemingly powerful countries as Germany do not have sovereignty. What we witnessed in the story with Navalny shows that the era that began under Gorbachev, when Moscow and Berlin built relations, if not friendly, then truly partnerships (and not only in the energy sector, but in general), – it seems that this era is over, and now there are no longer any illusions that Germany can take a sovereign position in the national interests of Germany.
From this we can draw far-reaching conclusions for Ukraine.
In fact, this is bad for Ukraine. First of all, because this situation makes it seem absolutely unnecessary for Moscow to pay attention to the reaction of Berlin and Brussels, and to act in accordance with the interests of the Russian Federation. As tough as the Russian leadership deems necessary.
Naturally, until recently, a certain deterrent for Moscow has always been the fact that there are partners in Europe with whom they want to establish normal relations, get rid of the sanctions regime, and so on. Now there are no illusions, in my opinion, the last illusion is over for Ukraine,” Pogrebinsky said.
“These attempts to jump out of your pants in a situation where you can find yourself in a very difficult situation have not yet been realized. We need to draw some conclusions for ourselves too. Well, I don’t know whether there are people who are ready to draw such conclusions. It seems to me that so far there are no prospects for any intelligible reaction to changes in external circumstances,” the expert added.
