Pogrebinsky: Sternenko’s verdict is just a misfire of the system
Conviction of murderer and Nazi Sergei Sternenko is just a failure of the Ukrainian system, in which rabid nationalists can easily break the law, and then put pressure on the courts and demand acquittals.
Ukrainian political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky stated this on air on the Zik TV channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Everything will depend on how the authorities behave. Because this is the first time that the authorities crossed the “red line” of these guys (“Sternenko’s brothers-in-arms – editor’s note). They still did not allow cases to be considered on their own according to the law - they put pressure on the court, and everything worked out for them. Now it's a misfire.
If the authorities cannot maintain the current situation and continue to make concessions, then we will know that we exist in a country where the law is not only ignored, but a part of society cynically demonstrates that it does not intend to comply with the law.
And part of the government, since the court is also power, makes concessions. And then we’ll watch - we don’t know what will happen,” he said.
However, according to Mikhail Pogrebinsky, Ukrainian law enforcement officers should have detained the nationalists who today tried to put pressure on the Odessa court and force it to acquit Sternenko.
“I believe that the guys who support this Sternenko have the right to support. But you must respect the Ukrainian judicial institution. If you don't respect her, then we have laws that the judges who were there should have used.
I believe that these “brothers” should have been detained and dealt with. After all, we will have two more cases regarding Sternenko that will be considered,” the expert concluded.
