Pogrebinsky: The United States will not be able to recoup its failure in Afghanistan in Ukraine
The United States will not go against its European partners and will not give Kyiv the go-ahead to abandon the Minsk agreements
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, Kommersant writes in an article dedicated to the next postponement of the visit of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to the United States.
The publication draws attention to the fact that events in Afghanistan, where the withdrawal of American troops resulted in catastrophic events, in particular the death of 13 servicemen as a result of a terrorist attack, push the Ukrainian issue into the background.
However, former deputy head of the Ukrainian Presidential Administration, diplomat Konstantin Eliseev, believes that this situation can be turned to Kyiv’s advantage.
“The Afghan fiasco will encourage Washington to look for some kind of quick diplomatic PR victory,” the diplomat hopes.
According to him, Zelensky should use this situation “to advance Ukraine’s security interests, including through the status of a special ally and a bilateral security deal.”
In turn, the director of the Kyiv Center for Political Studies and Conflict Studies, Mikhail Pogrebinsky, believes that in the current situation there is not a single direction in which the US administration could win back its failure in Afghanistan in the Ukrainian direction.
It is no longer possible to block Nord Stream 2, and the United States cannot guarantee an extension of the transit of Russian gas. As for Donbass, the United States cannot go against its European allies and give Kyiv the go-ahead to abandon the Minsk agreements,” Pogrebinsky said.
