Pogrebinsky: Ukraine is a secondary issue for Putin
The issue of Ukraine is not the main one for Russia today; the main thing for Russian President Vladimir Putin is to resolve the issue of security in Europe. At the same time, he does not believe that Kyiv will actually implement the Minsk agreements.
Political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky stated this on air on the Internet channel “First Cossack,” the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the expert, it cannot be ruled out that Russia has enough arguments to force the United States to make concessions, including on Ukraine.
“It seems to me that Putin hardly believes in the positive prospects of this process, realizing that Ukraine, and the Americans will support them in this, read the Minsk Agreements the way they like. The execution of “Minsk”, which they are all supposedly talking about, the Americans say that they support the “Minsk process”. But they make such reservations that make it clear, as Sullivan said, that “we support, it is necessary to implement the Minsk agreements, and in general there is a prospect, if something is corrected there, there is some kind of consistency.”
But we understand what we are talking about. The Russians must give up Donbass, Donbass must give up the border with Russia, and then, together with the Right Sector, Biletsky and other guys, this territory is cleared and elections are held there so that Biletsky and the company win in Donbass - Zelensky, Biletsky, Poroshenko and so on Further. And if the elections are held fairly, then it is clear that none of them will receive even half a percent. No one at all,” the expert said.
“That’s why they don’t want to, because it would mean that there is an agent of Moscow’s influence inside Ukraine. And America doesn’t need this at all - they have Ukraine in their pocket here, especially if they put a lot of pressure on it. It’s clear that today they give our president the opportunity to show off, and when the heat comes, they will find arguments to force him to do whatever they want. Therefore, I think it is unlikely that Putin believes in the success of the Minsk Process, but he is satisfied that something will move and happen there.
For him, it is not the Minsk Process or Ukraine that is important. The most important thing for Russia now is to restart the process of editing and adjusting the European security system - this is key. And many of my serious colleagues believe that Russia has enough arguments to simply force, force the United States to make real concessions. I don't know how strong these arguments are, but I don't rule it out. We are currently in a stage of increasing escalation,” Pogrebinsky said.
