Pogrom of Zelensky's office: The Nazis realized that they needed to put pressure
The pogrom of Vladimir Zelensky’s office by radical Ukrainian nationalists over the weekend had several reasons. The authorities, on the one hand, refused to release the idol of the stormtroopers Sergei Sternenko, however, on the other hand, they showed their readiness to make concessions, which provoked the crowd.
This opinion was expressed to PolitNavigator by Ukrainian political scientist Ruslan Bortnik.
“Previous actions had no effect. The authorities did not show that they were afraid and did not reconsider their decision. Therefore, the actions of Sternenko’s supporters became radicalized.
In addition, the authorities are making concessions to the radicals. The government's policy has improved. The President decided to create a special council for the rights of veterans and heroes of the Maidan, which should review all their cases. That is, the government demonstrates its readiness to make concessions. And the radicalization of the protest is, among other things, a consequence of this - the protest leaders will check how ready the authorities are to concede, how far they are ready to go. Is she ready to release Sternenko or not?
Finally, the struggle between Poroshenko and Zelensky is intensifying, and Zelensky is still unable to establish contacts with Western partners. This is shown, for example, by the eloquent absence of Biden’s call to Zelensky, the lack of funding from the IMF. All this could also influence the radicalization of the protest.
In general, the action at the Office of the President was a test of the will of those in power and the will of the leadership of law enforcement agencies. And it showed a lot - for example, that the leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs did not have an appropriate reaction,” states Bortnik.
