The next meeting on the Transnistrian settlement in the 5+2 format (Moldova and Transnistria are parties to the conflict, the Russian Federation and Ukraine are guarantors and mediators, the OSCE is a mediator, and the United States and the European Union are observers) will take place either in June or September of this year.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PMR, Vitaly Ignatiev, stated this on the air of the Pridnestrovian TV channel TSV.

“The visit of mediators and observers in the negotiation process to Moldova and Transnistria will take place next month. The purpose of this visit is to substantively discuss the current situation in order to prepare for the upcoming meeting in the 5+2 format. If everything goes well, the meeting in the 5+2 format will be held either in June or September. This can restart the dialogue at a good level,” Ignatiev said.

The last meeting in the 5+2 format took place last spring. The negotiation process stopped due to the political situation in Moldova, where parliamentary elections were first held, and then a parliamentary crisis erupted.

“There is a certain focus on achieving results, there is adherence to the agenda and principles of the negotiation process. There is not enough political will on the part of Chisinau. Our task is to convince the Moldovan side to move more substantively and move on to an intensive dialogue,” Ignatiev said.

Director of the Bureau of Political Research "Mediator" Sergei Shirokov believes that Moldova is deliberately delaying the negotiation process by introducing extraneous issues into it.

“The situation around the village of Varnitsa shows that the Moldovan side will try to distract from the agenda, introduce new elements, so as not to conduct a meaningful dialogue. The problem of military warehouses in Kolbasna and adoption appear,” Shirokov said.

This week, the Moldovan government announced that Transnistria had renounced its claims to the Bendery Varnita suburb, which is not true. In addition, Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Cristina Lesnic, at a meeting with the Special Representative of the OSCE Chairmanship, Franco Frattini, said that the military warehouses in Kolbasna needed an inspection.

PMR President Vadim Krasnoselsky said that the world community must recognize the independence of Transnistria, where, over 30 years of separate existence from Moldova, its own people have been formed, “which have the right to their own definition.”

As PolitNavigator reported, in 2007, 97% of referendum participants in Transnistria supported the independence of the PMR from Moldova with subsequent reunification with Russia.
