Before Uncle Sam turns his back: the EU is called upon to solve the Kosovo problem
US interest in the Western Balkans will not last long, and the European Union should take advantage of this.
The American publication The Globe Post writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Experience shows that American emphasis on small regions such as the Balkans tends to be short-lived. The European Union must seize the opportunity to increase US involvement in the Kosovo-Serbia issue and achieve a final settlement. Only cooperation between the US and the EU can break the impasse. If Brussels does not change course, it will be a terrible missed opportunity,” the article says.
The author believes that Serbia may agree to recognize Kosovo if the EU gives it clear guarantees of accession.
“Just last month, France vetoed EU accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia. For Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, whose country gained EU candidate status in 2012, the move signaled to the entire region that there was no path to membership in the foreseeable future. However, without the prospect of joining the EU, Kosovo and Serbia simply have no desire to work on a peace agreement,” the publication notes.
