A coalition of pro-separatist parties wants to hold a popular referendum on Catalan independence from Spain.
“If in this process, through its political or legal decisions, the Spanish state blocks the autonomous government of Catalonia, we will promote a declaration of independence for the region,” said former MEP and key figure in the coalition Raul Romeva.
In turn, Spanish Minister of Justice Rafael Catala said that in this case, the elimination of regional autonomy could occur.
“If division is realized, the Spanish Constitution provides for the termination of regional autonomy,” he said.
Spain's conservative government is unequivocally opposed to independence for the wealthy northeastern region of Catalonia, which wants to hold a referendum to determine its future political destiny, as was the case in Scotland in 2014.
Thus, the Prime Minister of Spain emphasized that Catalonia will not be independent.
