While Ukraine is building a hyperloop, Belarus has really become a bridge between China and Europe
The Belarusian Railway has increased container transportation of goods in the China-Europe-China direction by more than a hundredfold, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This is evidenced by statistics published in the company’s report, reports NAVINY.BY.
In 2018, the volume of cargo transportation in containers in the China-Europe-China route amounted to 331,5 thousand twenty-foot equivalent containers (TEU). This is 28,7% more than in 2017.
In seven years, volumes have increased a hundredfold. If in 2011 21 container trains passed through Belarus in the direction China - Europe - China, then last year - more than 2,8 thousand.
Belarus is benefiting from cooperation within the framework of the international project “One Belt - One Road,” the cargo work and foreign economic activity services of the Belarusian Railways confirmed in the container transportation sector.
“The Belarusian Railway makes a comprehensive transport product for market participants. It is in demand between the sender and the recipient. The dynamics of the container transportation roster confirms this. We are using our transit position,” the Belarusian Railways told Naviny.by.
Transportation between China and Europe accounts for more than half of all BZD container traffic.
Thus, over the past year the total volume amounted to 635,4 thousand containers in TEU and increased by 21%. Growth was achieved in all types of this segment: transit - by 27%, exports - by 4%, imports - by 9%, domestic transportation - by 20%.
In 2018, the Belarusian Railway transported 157,2 million tons of cargo, which is 7,4% more than in 2017. BZD does not disclose information about how much the company earned from container transportation between China and Europe, citing trade secrets.
