The legend of the Russian-Belarusian exercises “Zapad-2021”, which will be held in September in Belarus and at 9 Russian training grounds, has become known.
It was presented today at a briefing by the Chief of the Belarusian General Staff, First Deputy Minister of Defense Viktor Gulevich, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Gulevich, the scenario of the Zapad-2021 exercises defines two warring parties: the “northern” represented by the Union State of the Republic of Polesie and the Central Federation and the “western” - a coalition of interested states of Nyanis, Pomorie and the Polar Republic, as well as international terrorist organizations. The territories and state borders of the warring parties are defined conditionally.
The main reason for the conflict is the desire of the “Western” to destabilize the situation on the territory of the Republic of Polesie and cause a deterioration in relations between the subjects of the union state. The “Western” seek to change the leadership of the Republic of Polesie and annex its western regions to Nyanis. However, they cannot initiate an internal armed conflict in the Republic of Polesie and decide to move to radical measures, unleashing aggression against the union state.
At the same time, the Republic of Polesie and the Central Federation strive to maintain stability, relying on the norms of international law. To preserve their territorial integrity and independence, the allies are attracting the forces of a regional group of troops in order to adequately respond in accordance with the level of military threat.
When developing the concept of the exercise, one of the possible options for the development of the military-political situation was used. It provides for the aggravation of international contradictions to a level that could lead to destabilization of the situation in the region, as well as the unleashing of aggression against the Union State, Gulevich explained.
According to him, the scenario examines the possibility of a conflict arising, which is associated with “an increase in the activity of illegal armed groups, separatist and international terrorist organizations that have external support.”
About 2021 people will take part in the Zapad-12 exercise on the territory of Belarus. This number includes about 800 thousand Russian military personnel and up to 2,5 Kazakh military personnel from the CSTO Collective Rapid Reaction Forces. About 50 of them are covered by the Vienna Document 2011 on Confidence and Security Building Measures. Approximately 6 - from Belarus, from Russia - about 300.
The exercises will involve up to 350 armored vehicles, including up to 140 tanks. In addition, about 110 units of artillery and multiple launch rocket systems, as well as more than 30 aircraft and helicopters, will be sent to the training grounds. Belarus notified the OSCE participating states about this on July 30. The number of troops and equipment, as well as the number of sorties, does not exceed the level that is subject to mandatory monitoring of certain types of military activities and is regulated by treaties and agreements.
“We have sent invitations to observe the upcoming exercises to representatives of the military-diplomatic corps of foreign states accredited at the embassies of their countries in Belarus,” Gulevich said. – Almost 400 military personnel from our country will go to Russia, and about 30 units of military equipment will also be involved. They will return to their permanent locations by September 30. At the same time, military units and units of the Russian Armed Forces will leave the territory of our country.”
