“The political meaning of anti-Russian sanctions is zero” – former Italian Foreign Minister
US President Joe Biden, using his last strength at the humanitarian level, is consolidating European countries around anti-Russian sanctions, which have not seen any political and economic sense in them for a long time.
Former head of the Italian Foreign Ministry Franco Frattini stated this during the international forum “Primakov Readings,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In Italy we have always criticized this constant automatic extension of sanctions for six months. Sanctions should have a political meaning, but they have zero meaning. Russia has coped with the negative impact of sanctions. There is no unity regarding relations with Russia.
This is why President Biden is trying to once again unite European members around the concept of “democracy and fundamental human rights.” Because he knows very well that, with the exception of this emotional mention, it will be very difficult to keep Europe on one point of view, countries that have their own interests,” Frattini said.
“We are not ready to defend it so blindly. For example, for my country the first priority is the stability of Libya, stability in the Mediterranean. How can the issue of stabilizing Libya be resolved without a strategic relationship with Russia? Like it or not, Russia is a stabilizing factor there.
Turkey plays a certain role in the West of Libya, so in order to stabilize North Africa, normal strategic relations and close work with the Russian Federation are needed. It’s the same in the Middle East,” explained the Italian ex-minister.
