Political scientist: Kharkov was broken over the knee, but this will play a cruel joke on Kiev
The decision of the Kharkov City Council to recognize Russia as an “aggressor state” is the result of unprecedented pressure from official Kyiv, which, however, will play a cruel joke on the leadership of Ukraine in the future.
Roman Travin, director of the Eastern Ukrainian Center for Strategic Initiatives (Kharkov), told PolitNavigator about this.

“If we describe what happened today at the session of the Kharkov City Council in one word, then the most appropriate word would be “added.” The deputy corps led by Kernes resisted for quite a long time, especially in comparison with colleagues from other cities in the southeast and deputies of the Kharkov Regional Council, who, even if not on the first try, gave up in the spring. Before this, the issue of recognizing Russia as an “aggressor” was repeatedly removed at the level of forming the agenda of a number of previous sessions of the City Council.
I have already seen comments on this matter, they say it is a completely predictable decision. In my opinion, the intrigue remained until the last moment. However, the city authorities were still forced to give in: the prosecution of the mayor and the summons from the military registration and enlistment office for deputies right in the session hall is probably just the tip of the iceberg. I have no doubt that the arsenal of non-public instruments of pressure was much wider.
An important point is that the question was introduced at the suggestion of the governor. It is very important for Rainin to demonstrate that he is in complete control of the situation in the region. From the same series, the awarding of the title of honorary citizen of Kharkov to the head of the Poroshenko administration, Boris Lozhkin, to whom Rainin is close. Probably, Gennady Adolfovich received something in return for giving in to the governor, at least some guarantees.
One of the communist deputies called today's events “rape”, this is, indeed, a fairly accurate description of what happened. Moreover, we are talking not only about the deputy corps, but about the residents of the city as a whole.
Despite the fact that there are quite a lot of supporters of the current Kyiv policy in the city, the majority of the townspeople clearly do not consider Russia an aggressor, despite the fact that they are trying to convince them of this “from every angle.”
Be that as it may, I have said it many times before and continue to believe so: all these consistent attempts by the Ukrainian authorities to break Kharkov over the knee will ultimately inevitably play against Kiev, and with a high degree of probability will lead to consequences directly opposite to those that the “Ukrainian patriots” are seeking ", says Travin.
