Political scientist: the SBU raid on the Communist Party office was “preventive” - the authorities are simply afraid
The current regime is looking forward to the mass movement of people under protest slogans and is trying to neutralize them ahead of time.
This is how Kiev political scientist Sergei Belashko commented on today’s raid by the SBU on the headquarters of the Communist Party of Ukraine.
“Perhaps the security forces received information that the communists are preparing actions for May 9 and these actions need to be neutralized. For this purpose, such a “preventive” raid was carried out. Communist actions are not just a march with banners and slogans, they show that actions to decommunize and erase historical memory are ineffective. Besides, it’s one thing when 20 people march with banners and slogans, it’s another thing when thousands come out,” he says.
According to Sergei Belashko, today in Ukraine mass protests are quite likely, regardless of the authority of the communists, their activity and similar factors.
“People perceive such actions as a protest against the regime in a broad sense - a protest against utility tariffs, against prices, against war, against the lawlessness of the special services and the police, while at the same time their inactivity and inability to ensure order (paradoxically),” he says.
