The political scientist explained why Dodon was so embarrassed
The result of the first round of the presidential elections in Moldova, where ex-Prime Minister Maia Sandu is in the lead, was influenced by a number of factors, including the limited powers of the president and voters' disappointment in all the country's politicians.
Political scientist Kost Bondarenko stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Sociologists have said before that Sandu and Dodon have approximately equal chances of winning and that, for example, Dodon’s victory in the first round would mean the initiation of the Maidan in Chisinau.
It is not worth saying unequivocally that Dodon disappointed his voters with his not entirely pro-Russian position. There is still no more pro-Russian politician among the top-rated politicians in Moldova. And it is unlikely that this factor played a role in this situation.
I think that most likely Dodon’s rating was reflected in the limited powers of the President of Moldova. He was removed from power several times a day and he could not block the adoption of important decisions, since he does not have full power. And it was disappointing.
In addition, for some time he was thought of as a kind of “anti-plakhotnyuk” who could resist the oligarch and the pro-Western policies he pursued. But now Plahotniuc is not in active politics in Moldova, and he does not need a counterweight.
Finally, many Moldovans suspect that in Moldovan politics (as in Ukrainian) there is a big agreement between all politicians and all these contradictions between them are nothing more than a conspiracy. There is great disappointment in all politicians without exception, which is why the turnout is so low. Many did not vote for anyone,” the political scientist concluded.
