“I was at the referendum a year ago and specifically talked with the Tatars. On average, they were in the same mood as the majority of Crimean residents. The problem of their opposition is exaggerated. It is exaggerated by the Majlis and everyone associated with it.
Of course, the Tatars are more cautious and more distrustful of Russia than others. But a year has passed, they also see what is happening in Ukraine, they received the same pensions as Russian pensioners. If the flow of tourists is established, and it will be, their financial condition will not fall, they will react normally, like all Crimeans.
I don’t think that anyone will oppress them based on their national or religious beliefs; in Russia this is not the case in any national or multinational republic; this is not in our traditions at all.
I wouldn’t do any special integration programs or increase loyalty, but I would welcome some contacts along the Muslim line: it would be very nice if the children of the Crimean Tatars went in large delegations to Moscow, Kazan, Ufa, Grozny, They would look at how Muslims live in Russia, and in general, how Russia lives.
I think that after this the myths of the Majlis would simply be ridiculous and trust in it would be completely undermined. Large delegations of children would be very useful all year round, and in return these republics could also send their children to resorts all year round,” argues Matveychev.
