Kyiv, September 05 (PolitNavigator, Yuriy Kovalchuk) – “Poroshenko had a plan to liberate Donetsk and Lugansk before the elections in order to look like a winner. The plan did not work - Putin did not allow it. There is no room for maneuver, so we will have to negotiate a ceasefire,” political scientist Vladimir Fesenko told the British news agency Reuters.

“It became obvious that instead of winning the war, Poroshenko could lose everything. This is a big risk and it is better for Poroshenko to agree to a ceasefire, securing this hard-won “draw” and thereby preserving the possibility that elections will take place.

Poroshenko is a realist and a pragmatist... He understands that time is running out, that we need to quickly end the war and get to work on the economy,” says Fesenko.

The political scientist believes that Yatsenyuk will become the leading figure of a new “patriotic” party that will unite disgruntled supporters of ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. Such a party, pro-European and liberal, would be a natural ally of Poroshenko. Fesenko refutes talk of a rift between Yatsenyuk and the president, saying they were playing “bad cop and good cop.”

“Poroshenko will be a peacemaker, and Yatsenyuk will portray himself as a supporter of a more militant position. We will have both a peacemaker and a warrior, they will cover the entire spectrum of voters and, thus, neutralize Tymoshenko.

But Poroshenko needs to be careful. If he is too obvious about trying to improve relations with Moscow, he will lose the support of nationalist parties, especially in Western Ukraine. And here it’s worth remembering the fate of his predecessor,” says Vladimir Fesenko.

As PolitNavigator reported, a ceasefire in Donbass is possible this afternoon if peace agreements are reached during a meeting of the trilateral contact group with the leaders of Novorossiya in Minsk. The corresponding statements were made by the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, as well as in the DPR and LPR.
